This last section of the Northern Via Francigena will amaze you: would you ever expect to find an ancient Etruscan road right outside Viterbo? And a Roman amphitheatre built in tufa stone? The remains of ancient towers rising through the chestnut trees? Enchanting forests, waterfalls and Roman remains hidden deep in the woods?
This part of Lazio, called Tuscia (the land of the Tusci, the Etruscans), has all of this and more to offer, surprising you with every step you take on the Via Francigena Viterbo to Rome Pilgrimage, as you walk closer and closer to Rome.
On the last day of the walk, there it is — the St. Peter's Dome, visible from Monte Mario park. Then come the final steps through the lively Vatican streets and beneath the great columns of St. Peter's Square — and there you are, in the place every traveller longs to reach: the heart of the Eternal City.
